Indianapolis Spring Break, Day 3

The snow! The snow comes to us on Spring Break! No!!

–Well OK, spring break not in Florida is asking for snow.

Brunch was at a place called “Milktooth.” Odd name, but interesting culinary offerings.

Just to give you an idea of the menu:

  • sweet petite oyseters.
  • potato & rutabaga latke. (what is that??)
  • bowl of spicy miso soup.
  • crispy cauliflower wedge with tahini sauce.
  • smoked great lakes whitefish salad on sourdough challah.
  • dehydrated beet raisins & tumeric roasted beets.

The menu goes on. Krysten would probably eat here all the time if she could! I liked the burger I got. There was also a pastry selection I would totally go for.

They have a very ecclectic menu filled with things I’ve never heard of. That by itself tends to be off-putting to me (I’m not as adventurous as Krysten is, and I was afraid we wouldn’t find anything that the kids would eat too), but what we found was very tasty!

We decided to do a shopping mall day, not to really buy anything special, but to walk and explore. It seems to be one of the things we do on vacations. But first, attached to the mall, we planned on visiting the “Rhythm! Discovery Center.”

This was a percussion museum filled with all kinds of instruments from all around the world. Lots of things for children to hit and play! Large drums, cymbals, xylophones, marimbas, ethnic instruments, some concert instruments like tubular bells and tympani, and even a range of electronic instruments like drum pads or electric drum sets. There were also many vintage instruments which were on display out of reach. A couple neat areas include a large atrium with a circle of drums and a chair at each, and also a couple soundproofed practice rooms with full drum sets. The drum circle allows a central leader to indicate both to the group and to individuals specific rhythms or dynamics (how loud) to play to create a collective rhythm as simple or as intricate as desired.

After finishing up at the percussion museum, we roamed the mall for an hour or so. There was a Cinnabon by the mall entrance connected to the skywalk we passed through, and I have a soft spot for cinnamon rolls. (We’re on vacation, so we can splurge a little!)

Next, Krysten had spotted one of those Chinese massage parlors and decided her back needed some TLC. While she got a massage, the boys and I strolled around the mall to explore. I found a smoothie/frappe place I thought I would treat myself to. I got some kind of mocha frappe. It was yummy.

The only other major thing we did there was visit a set of coin-operated rides KC spotted by the Cinnabon. There are some coin-op rides at a mall local to us and KC is always asking to ride it. It’s the one that plays different songs depending on which (functioning) button you press.

A little bit of scenic driving (and some un-scenic trash finding) later found us back at Long’s Bakery! (Like I said, “splurge.”) We came back to the hotel to try to get some work done. RA & KC were getting a bit squirrelly so there were a few times I took RA out of the room to explore the hotel and keep him occupied. It’s great we had a suite, but we can only be happy in a contained space for so long! The floor was getting pretty crummy with chunks of goldfish snacks, too. We decided to drive to another mall in the evening to get out of the room and find some supper. We found a mall (TripAdvisor to the rescue!) and strolled around. We made our way to the food court for supper. Krysten found a Japanese chain with sushi and Philip found a gourmet sandwich place which had a unique ordering system. We were about there until closing time. We have one more day out of town before we head back home.
